Easy Brazilian Escondidinho Recipe đŸ„˜

If you’ve never tried Escondidinho, you’re in for a treat!
This Brazilian comfort food is a delicious casserole made with layers of creamy mashed potatoes (or yucca) and a savory filling, usually with seasoned meat or chicken.
The name Escondidinho means “little hidden one” in Portuguese — because the filling is hidden under a blanket of mashed goodness.

Today, we’ll make a quick and simple version that’s perfect for a weeknight dinner!

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the mashed layer:

  • 1.5 lbs (700 g) potatoes, peeled and chopped

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • œ cup milk

  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or shredded chicken

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 1 onion, diced

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 medium tomato, diced

  • Salt, pepper, and paprika to taste

  • œ cup grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water until soft (about 15 minutes). Drain, mash with butter and milk, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

  2. Prepare the filling:
In a large skillet, heat oil and sauté onion and garlic until fragrant. Add the meat and cook until browned. Mix in diced tomato, seasonings, and cook for another 5 minutes.

  3. Assemble:
In a baking dish, spread half the mashed potatoes, add all the meat filling, and top with the remaining mashed potatoes.

  4. Top and bake:
Sprinkle cheese on top (optional) and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.

Enjoy your Brazilian comfort food moment — simple, cozy, and absolutely delicious! đŸ‡§đŸ‡·
